U.S. senators ask White House to probe ZTE work in Venezuela following Reuters special report
Reuters exclusively reported that two U.S. senators will ask the Trump administration to investigate whether ZTE Corp, the Chinese telecommunications company, violated U.S. sanctions by helping Venezuela set up a database that monitors the behavior of its citizens. The request follows a special report published on Nov. 14, in which Reuters investigated the company’s role in helping Caracas develop the controversial database and an associated identity card program. ZTE has already paid multiple penalties to U.S. authorities regarding sanctions violations in Iran and North Korea. It now faces the prospect of further investigation because of U.S. sanctions on Venezuela.
