Reuters ahead in reporting California to ban crude from Trump offshore drilling plan
Reuters was first to report on Feb. 7 that California intends to fight the Trump administration’s ambitious offshore oil drilling plan by preventing crude oil from any new offshore rigs from crossing state property. Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom made the threat – the toughest pushback by any coastal state yet against the administration’s proposal to open up nearly all U.S. shores to drillers – in a letter to the Interior Department that was seen by Reuters before it was publicly announced. Following the Reuters report, the Interior Department said it would consider feedback from states as it shapes the final drilling plan in the coming months, and oil industry trade groups said companies were less likely to pursue new leases off California’s coast even if they were offered.
