Reuters reveals U.S. consumer protection official puts Equifax probe on ice

Reuters exclusively reported that Mick Mulvaney, the interim head of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), has pulled back from a full-scale probe of how Equifax Inc failed to protect the personal data of millions of consumers. Equifax said in September that hackers stole personal data it had collected on some 143 million Americans. Following the Reuters report, consumer advocates and Democratic lawmakers, including Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, called for the CFPB to resume its investigation into the credit reporting agency.
