Reuters reveals how U.S. FDA priced 'lost pleasure' of junk food into calorie count rule

Reuters revealed how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s new rules on restaurant calorie counts priced in the “lost pleasure” consumers will feel when they end up choosing a salad over French fries. The analysis, which is being criticized by some economists and public health groups, was tucked into new FDA regulations which require businesses such as chain restaurants and movie theaters to display calorie counts. The FDA said the lost-pleasure analysis balances the benefits to consumers when calorie information leads them to eat healthier with the sense of deprivation people may feel when they give up foods they enjoy.
